The number of active devices running Jelly Bean -- Android 4.1 and 4.2, combined -- rose 3.4 percent to 28.4 percent in April, surpassing Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0), which fell 1.8 percent to 27.5 percent, according to monthly user numbers published by Google on Wednesday. Jelly Bean's growing adoption rate was not enough to overtake the declining Gingerbread (Android 2.3), which slid 1.7 percent to 38.5 percent.
The driving force behind that growth seems to be Samsung's Galaxy S3, which has sold more than 50 million units since its release in May 2012. With phenomenal sales expected for Samsung's new flagship smartphone -- the Galaxy S4 -- Jelly Bean is expected to wrest the Android crown from Gingerbread in the coming months.
