Karate masters 'have psychic abilities'

Researchers have found karate masters can anticipate where an attack is coming from before their opponent has even moved - and are now studying whether elite cricketers have the same ability.
A joint study by Murdoch University in Western Australian and RMIT University in Melbourne has found karate masters are able to anticipate how an opponent will strike even before that opponent has moved a muscle.
By comparing novices, state level competitors and international karate stars, it found experts and near-experts gathered vital visual information earlier than novices.
Most surprising was the level of anticipation by experts who had a unique ability to use information from an opponent in a completely still stance, Murdoch University’s Dr Sean Muller said.
“In the world of professional sports, the difference between standing on the podium and being on the sidelines comes down to milliseconds and centimetres, so athletes need every advantage they can get,” he said.
The researchers are now working with Cricket Australia to look at how, and at what point, a batsman recognises a bowler’s delivery, in a bid to improve coaching.
“If we can understand how an elite cricketer can recognise, say, a bouncer, we can arm coaches with methods to help up-and-coming batsmen reach their maximum potential,” Dr Muller says.
Work is also being done with Australian Baseball League team Perth Heat to compare visual cues in baseball and cricket, and determine how experts strike a baseball.

Bomb in Russia's Dagestan kills 2

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) — Russian police say a bomb has exploded in a busy shopping area in the capital of the restive republic of Dagestan, killing at least two people.
A spokeswoman for the republic's Interior Ministry, Fatina Ubaidatova, says there were also an undetermined number of people injured in Wednesday's explosion. She did not have details on the force or construction of the bomb.
Dagestan is plagued by Islamic insurgents who frequently mount small attacks on police. The republic is home to the parents of the suspects in last month's Boston Marathon bombing. One of the suspects, who was killed in a shootout with Boston police, paid a long visit to Dagestan last year and investigators are probing whether he had contact with extremists there.

IBM makes tiny movie by pushing molecules around

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — IBM says it has made the world's tiniest stop-motion movie.
It's a one-minute video in which individual carbon monoxide molecules are rearranged to show a boy dancing and bouncing on a trampoline.
Each frame measures 45 by 25 nanometers. There are 25 million nanometers in an inch.
The lead scientist says it's the first time anything so small has been maneuvered to tell a narrative.
Hugely magnified, the movie (http://bit.ly/17ZmHIt ) is reminiscent of early video games.
It was made using a microscope that magnifies the surface over 100 million times. A tiny needle moved the molecules across a copper surface.

Samsung Ditches Hard Buttons on NX2000 Mirrorless Camera

Samsung is all-in on mirrorless cameras. After launching the NX300 earlier this year, now the company unveils the NX2000, a more affordable model that's aimed at people who want to upgrade from point-and-shoots but want something more compact and affordable than a digital SLR.
Mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras, which don't have a viewfinder and therefore don't need the space-hogging mirror that makes DSLRs so bulky, are advancing in technology and lowering in price. The NX2000 costs just $649 (with a 20-50mm lens), which $100 cheaper than the NX300, yet the new model has almost all of its older brother's features.
The NX2000 is compact and light (just 8 ounces with no lens), but it still has impressive picture-taking abilities: Its APS-C sensor can capture images up to 20.3 megapixels, powered by a DRIMe IV imaging engine capable of shooting up to eight stills in continuous-shooting model. Shutter speed can go as high as 1/4,000th of a second.

The one significant feature that doesn't carry over from the NX300 is the hybrid autofocus system that cuts down on lag time. But it makes up for it with advanced wireless abilities: The NX2000 has built-in Wi-Fi for pairing with a phone or tablet, made easier with NFC (near-field communication). AutoShare relays all your pics instantly to your device, and if you're connected to an access point, they can go directly to a service or your PC.
Another big difference is the vastly reduced number of hard buttons, which some (such as myself) might consider an improvement. The typical circular-button controls found on most compact cameras are gone, with those controls relegated to the touchscreen, which now has more room to stretch out: It measures 3.7 inches diagonal.
Interesting quirk: The NX2000 also uses microSD cards instead of full-size SD cards. Since the camera is intended as an ideal companion to a smartphone or tablet, it makes some sense that it uses the same kind of memory.
I got a little hands-on time with the NX2000, and it felt very similar to the NX300. I appreciated the larger touchscreen, which reminded me a little of the Samsung Galaxy Camera. I also didn't think the autofocus was appreciably slower than the NX300, but ask me again after I've had a chance to test it in low light.
Just like the NX300, the NX2000 can shoot in 3D, with the right lens. The $599.99 3D-equipped lens can capture both still pics and video in 3D format. The 45mm/f1.8 lens lens also has a 2D mode.
The $649.99 NX2000 rounds out Samsung's line of mirrorless cameras, which starts with the NX1100 at $599.99 and tops out with the NX20 at $1,099.99.

CERN Scientists Search for Elusive Anti-Gravity

European scientists are currently trying to collect enough antimatter to determine if the elusive substance reacts to gravity in the opposite way that normal matter does—by "falling up" instead of down.
Anti-gravity has long been a staple of science fiction as a future technological means for propelling spacecraft away from massive objects like planets and stars? But does it really exist in nature?
Scientists working on the Antihydrogen Laser Physics Apparatus (Alpha) experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Switzerland aim to find out, according to reports. They theorize that antimatter, made up of antiparticles which possess an opposite electrical charge and quantum spin to normal particles, could also be repelled by ordinary matter instead of being attracted to it.
Writing in the latest issue of Nature Communications, the Alpha experiment scientists from the LHCb team note that "there are many indirect indications that no such differences exist" in how matter and antimatter interacts with gravity. But they also suggest that the new wealth of data the experiment has collected on antihydrogen particles is worth looking through to check if anti-gravity does exist, while proposing a way to do that.
"[T]here have been no direct, free-fall style, experimental tests of gravity on antimatter. Here we describe a novel direct test methodology; we search for a propensity for antihydrogen atoms to fall downward when released from the Alpha antihydrogen trap. In the absence of systematic errors, we can reject ratios of the gravitational to inertial mass of antihydrogen >75 at a statistical significance level of 5 percent; worst-case systematic errors increase the minimum rejection ratio to 110. A similar search places somewhat tighter bounds on a negative gravitational mass, that is, on antigravity. This methodology, coupled with ongoing experimental improvements, should allow us to bound the ratio within the more interesting near equivalence regime," the researchers write.
The LHCb research team is now prying into other mysteries of antimatter such as the rates at which exotic particles decay into either matter or antimatter, according to BBC News. Scientists last week were able to determine "a slight difference in the decay of particles called Bs mesons," BBC News reported.
But one big hurdle in this research is that producing antiparticles is difficult—and keeping them around for any length of time is even tougher.
The universe contains plenty of normal matter but just trace amounts of antimatter. When normal particles and antiparticles collide they destroy each other in a process called annihilation, creating high-energy photons, or in some experimental instances, new exotic particles.
But in recent years, researchers working on CERN's Alpha experiment have been able to trap and maintain antihydrogen atoms for as long as 15 minutes. That's given them much more time to study these antiparticles, BBC News noted. Now CERN scientists are looking through data collected from 434 antihydrogen atoms they've trapped in the past few years "with the anti-gravity question in mind."
"In the course of all the experiments, we release [the antihydrogen atoms] and look for their annihilation. We've gone through those data to see if we can see any influence of gravity on the positions at which they annihilate—looking for atoms to fall for the short amount of time they exist before they hit the wall," Jeffrey Hangst, a spokesperson for the Alpha experiment, told BBC News.

Microsoft is planning to introduce Skype’s services within its webmail. Users in the UK can now take advantage of the service and call and send messages to their Skype friends, right from the webmail service itself.
Users who are interested to view and use Skype right from their inbox will need to download a plug-in first though for it to work. The plugin will work with Microsoft’s own IE, Google’s Chrome and Mozilla’s Firefox.
Customers who have their own Microsoft account have already been asked to merge their Microsoft account with their Skype ones. This enables them to add all their Skype contacts to Outlook.com.
