The story about the 9-year-old girl who gave birth to a healthy almost six pound baby girl is getting stranger by the minute. Yesterday, according to KSDK which got their information from USA Today, the girl was impregnated at eight –years-old. The 17-year-old father went in hiding as soon as he found out she was pregnant. The baby girl was delivered by caesarian section on Jan 27, 2013, at the Hospital General de Occidente close to Guadalajara, Mexico.
The story may be hard to believe but it does happen. According to UPI, “While giving birth at such a young age is obviously unusual, it is not impossible. The age when girls start menstruating is dropping; although the average is still about 12, it is even lower among Hispanic girls. Pregnancy can occur before a girl ever gets her first period, since the bleeding occurs at the end of the menstrual cycle after ovulation.”

It appears that the 9-year-old girl who gave birth in Mexico may be older than was previously reported. Today, Hollywood Life reports doctors believe that she may be at least 15-years-old. “Jarisco health commissioner Antonio Munez revealed in a press conference on Feb. 7, 2013 that, ‘The medical characteristics of this child do not correspond to those of a nine-year-old girl.”
Was a crime committed?
“If Dafne is actually 15 or older, having sex with her 17-year-old boyfriend would no longer be a crime because it is only against Mexican law to sleep with someone 14 or younger.”
Did the mother lie?
Hollywood Life goes on to say there are many speculations as to why the parents lied about the daughter’s age. One theory is that Dapne had not yet started school and it would be easier to get her into school if she was younger.
However, the neighbors claim that the mother is a prostitute and would want to maintain her daughter is younger so that she would get a better price if she prostituted as well. Younger girls are offered more money than teenagers.
Reported cases of children giving birth
If Dapne is truly that young, she is not the youngest girl to give birth. Huff Post reported one recorded case of an unidentified Chinese girl who gave birth to a healthy baby boy at the age of 9-years-olds as well. Nevertheless the youngest known child to give birth was a 6-year-old girl in Peru in 1939.
The story is becoming more bizarre as the day goes by. Perhaps finding out the truth will be more intriguing than the birth itself. The case is still under investigation.
