What’s more American than competing in a hot dog eating contest on the Fourth of July?
To over 40,000 people on Coney Island this afternoon, nothing.
On the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues, they witnessed Joey
Chestnut of San Jose, Calif. inhale a record 69 hot dogs in 10 minutes,
which won him his seventh straight Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating
Contest championship.
He didn’t do it without the help of his girlfriend Neslie, who stood in front of him and yelled at him to eat more.
On the women’s side, Sonya Thomas, who weighs only 100 lbs. and is
known as the “Black Widow” of competitive eating, downed almost 37
franks for the win.
