Hi-ho, no silver: 'The Lone Ranger' failed to meet box office expectations on its opening night.
"The Lone Ranger" might want to keep that mask on, after all.
Disney's hugely budgeted revamp of the Western action raked in only $9.7 million in its box office debut.

That puts the Johnny Depp-helmed film on track to bring in around $45 million over the long July 4th holiday weekend, a paltry number in comparison to the $225 million budget.
The hero's nemesis? "Despicable Me 2," which opened to the tune of $34 million.

"Simply because of the budget and Depp's star power, there were huge expectations for this film to perform well at the box office," Hollywood.com Box Office president Paul Dergerabedian said. "Any time you have a high-profile star in a brand name movie, it puts the film under enormous scrutiny."
But Dergerabadien notes that there's still hope for the flick to bring in some money.

"The goal is to do well internationally," Dergerabedian continued. "That's where you can make back some of that budget. They're going to have to rely pretty heavily on that marketplace."
The movie still has time to bounce back over the weekend, but should the outing fail to pick up a bigger slice of the movie audiences, it will mark a flop for Disney
